Research accomplishments and future plans

My dissertation was in the field of behavioral economics, but I have moved from that field to the field of economic history and more specifically to the study of the economic history in the land of Israel.  My goal is to write a comprehensive economic history of the land of Israel from the Ottoman period until the present. To the best of my knowledge, no such book or study exists. I have been working on this goal for the last twenty years.

I now have written papers on the Ottoman period, the Mandate period, the beginning years of the founding of the State of Israel and on the economy in the West Bank and Gaza from 1950 to 2005.  I also have several papers on current issues in the economy of Israel, as for example my latest paper on the effects of the war in Gaza on Israel’s economy.  In addition, I gave several presentations in Yad Yitzhak Ben Zvi Institute on the Israeli economy in the 1970s, and I have taught classes in the IMBA program in Bar Ilan University and Netanya Academic College on the economic history of the land of Israel.  I am now working on filling in the “blanks,” the economy in Israel in the 1960s and 1980s, as well as estimating new benchmark per capita GDP estimates in the Maddison framework for the land of Israel from the Byzantium period through the founding of the State of Israel.

One important aspect of the study of the long-term economic history of the land of Israel is that one also studies one of the most important topics in economics, long-term economic growth.  My goal has always been to see what one can learn about economic growth in general from the study of the economy in the land of Israel.  Within this endeavor, two of my papers add to the literature on the relationship between institutions and economic growth, for which Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson just received the Noble Prize in economics.  In my future work on the Israeli economy, I will continue to incorporate their concepts of inclusive and exclusive institutions in my analysis of the economic growth in Israel.

In addition to studying the economic history of the land of Israel, I have always been intrigued by the relationship between economics and Judaism.  In the beginning of my career, I focused more on this issue, but it is a topic which I plan to return to every now and then. I envision that my seven papers on this topic will form the basis for a book on economics and Judaism.

Finally, in the last few years I have started to research and write about issues relating to labor economics. In some cases, these issues also relate to Israel’s economy. For example, in 2021/22, I wrote a chapter in a book on Haredi women working in Israel, and the book was published in January 2024.

Teaching Statement

I enjoy teaching and my goal in teaching is for the students to enjoy learning economics and to look forward to coming to class.  My teaching method is to encourage questions by asking the students if they understand the material and I tell them repeatedly to ask questions if something is not clear.  I also use quirky examples that students can relate to. For example, in some classes, I make questions on tests and examples based on characters in popular TV shows and movies.  At times, this is a challenge to find new “characters” for exam questions.  In addition, I enjoy studying economic history and try to insert historical points in my lectures that relate to the subject being discussed to make the material more interesting.  Occasionally when students ask questions about these historical points, it leads me to think how I can present my research in economic history in a more lucid manner.

I work very hard on the PowerPoint presentations to make them as clear as possible.  Many times, I see from student questions, either during the class or afterwards or even during exams that they did not fully grasp the point I was trying to teach, and this leads me to think about how to present the material better in the next class or in the following year and to update the PowerPoint presentations, which I do before each semester and also during the semester.  I also regularly update the PowerPoint files with new data that is relevant for the particular class, as for example in macroeconomic classes, the latest GDP and inflation data.  Accordingly, I never upload the previous year’s PowerPoint files on the Moodle system for a new class, but I upload the files from my computer which I revised and reviewed.  This process keeps the classes fresh even if I have taught a class many times.
